What Food Can I Eat Before Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a procedure that screens for cancer in the colon. During the colonoscopy, the doctor examines your colon and with a small camera mounted on a flexible, lighted tube just before the procedure, you will receive some sedation to put you to sleep.

During the procedure an endoscope is inserted in the colon. The doctor views the inside of the colon on a monitor looking for any tumors, polyps or growths, as well as trying to find the source of unusual symptoms. He can remove small polyps and take tissue samples with the colonoscope. The colon must be thoroughly cleansed before performing colonoscopy, so it is necessary to begin preparing for a colonoscopy a few days before the procedure. Of course it doesn’t mean you have to starve.

You only must stay away from heavy foods and meals that would make you feel stuffed. You should just follow a low-fiber diet. Low-fiber foods are easy to digest and leave your system quickly. They include eggs, white bread, white rice and plain pasta, lean meat, steamed fish or chicken without skin. The day before the procedure you can’t eat anything solid that is seeds, nuts, or popcorn, fatty foods, tough meat, whole grains or raw fruits and vegetables. Instead, you can drink only clear liquids to avoid dehydration.

The purpose of the clear liquid diet is to keep the stomach and intestines clean while limiting the stress on the digestive system .Clear liquids are those that are transparent at room temperature, including  broth, clear juice (apple, white grape), clear soft drinks , etc. You are allowed to have coffee and tea but without cream. Any liquid that isn’t clear is not allowed to drink.

You mustn’t drink orange juice, pineapple juice, grape juice. A diabetic patient needs to inform his doctor of his health condition. Usually, a diabetic must consume 200 grams of carbohydrates a day when he is on the liquid diet. The patient should spread the carbohydrates throughout the day and monitor his blood sugar. The day before and on the day of the procedure your colon must be empty and clean for the doctor to get a proper look at it.

It may seem inconvenient and unpleasant, no one looks forward to colonoscopy preparation, but you should try to remind yourself that it is temporary, and it might help save your life. So during this period you must stop eating solid foods, that means no meats, fruits, vegetables, breads, grains and pastas. Even soft foods like cheese, yogurt or soups with noodles are not permitted. After all It is not that bad to go without the solid food for a day.

Red, orange or purple beverages may leave a colored spot on the walls of the colon, the red color can make the colon look inflamed, consequently, it will be hard for the doctor to see the real picture. Moreover, the coloring of the colon may be misinterpreted during the colonoscopy.

That is why these beverages should be avoided for two days before the test. Two hours before the procedure you must not drink or eat anything, even water. This step is important to help prevent you from getting sick after the procedure. People who drink right before the procedure risk getting sick and breathing vomit into their lungs.
